This summer a client showed me the underside of their deck. The joists run out from inside the house and hold up the deck from below. Years of water had left them stained, rotted and ugly.

The good news is the deck was still solid. A previous owner had already added treated 2x8s alongside the damaged joists for extra support.
But my client still had to look up at that every time they walked out the door. They asked if I could cover it up.
So we kept it simple. I wrapped each joist in new boards to hide the damaged wood and give the underside a clean, finished look.

I want to be clear about one thing. This was a cosmetic fix, not a structural one. The support was already there. My job was to make it look good. If you have water damage, I’ll always tell you honestly which kind of fix you need.
